THE QUICK TAKE

Compare flushes from highest rank down. Equal top cards mean you continue to the next position; the first difference decides. All five ranks equal means a tie under the standard baseline, regardless of suit.

Traditional Pusoy five-card comparison · Fixed paper examples · No arrangement advice

Continue past equal top cards

Not always. Under the standard hand ranking used by the cited traditional Pusoy reference, compare two ordinary flushes from the highest card down. If the highest ranks match, compare the next ranks, continuing until the first difference. If all five ranks match, the flushes are equal. Suits do not break that tie under this baseline.

This concerns fixed five-card hands of the same category. First use the straight, flush and straight-flush checks to confirm what each group is. A straight flush belongs to a different category.

Put the supplied ranks in order

Our original example gives Ana A♥ · J♥ · 8♥ · 6♥ · 2♥ and Ben A♣ · J♣ · 9♣ · 4♣ · 3♣. Each group contains five cards of one suit, with gaps in the rank sequence. All ten card identities are distinct.

Write each group in descending rank order. Do not line up cards according to where they happen to lie on the table. Here they are already ordered for inspection:

PositionAnaBenReading
HighestAAEqual: continue
SecondJJEqual: continue
Third89First difference: Ben’s flush is higher
Fourth64Not needed after the first difference
Fifth23Not needed after the first difference

The common description “ace-high flush” is insufficient to separate these two hands. Mark the third position, then write “9 compared with 8” beside it so another learner can follow the reason.

Do not vote across five positions

A learner notices that Ana’s six exceeds Ben’s four and tries to use that later position to reverse the result. That is not the comparison procedure. Once the third position differs, later positions do not cancel it. Nor do we count how many individual positions each person leads.

On a paper copy, cover the fourth and fifth rows after marking the first difference. The explanation should remain complete. This covering step is a way to audit the reasoning, not a suggestion about concealing cards in an actual game.

Keep the suit symbols on the original labels for identity checking. Their job here is to establish that each group is a flush, not to supply a second ranking system. Do not import Pusoy Dos suit order into this Pusoy example.

Can two different suits still tie?

COMPARE ALL FIVE RANKS

In a separate example, Cora has K♦ · 10♦ · 7♦ · 5♦ · 2♦. Dan has K♠ · 10♠ · 7♠ · 5♠ · 2♠. A note says “Dan’s flush is higher because it uses spades”. Does that follow the stated baseline?

Reveal the explanation

No. The ordered ranks match at every position: K, 10, 7, 5 and 2. These flushes are equal under the standard rule. The suits distinguish the ten physical cards but do not decide this comparison.

Write five equals signs between the two rank lists. Unlike the first example, no row supplies a first difference. Stop with “equal flushes”; do not invent a sixth comparison or select an unrelated card from elsewhere.

A row comparison is not the whole result

The two examples are separate paper exercises with supplied hands. They do not ask you to choose an arrangement from thirteen cards. Pusoy compares corresponding rows, and the within-player row-order requirement is a separate check.

We have not supplied complete front, middle and back arrangements for these people, so the examples cannot establish a complete game result. Use the comparison grid to organise which rows are being compared without adding payment calculations.

This lesson uses traditional standard ranking with no wild cards. App modes, special declarations and house variations require their own instructions. No App tie display or automatic comparison was tested.
