THE QUICK TAKE
For two five-card one-pair hands, compare the pair rank first. Only if it matches do you compare the unpaired cards from highest to lowest, stopping at the first difference.

Start with two complete five-card hands
This lesson compares two fixed one-pair hands, such as corresponding five-card rows in traditional Pusoy. Each contains one equal-rank pair and three other, mutually different ranks. The unpaired cards are often called kickers.
Pagat’s Pusoy reference uses standard hand ranking. Under that comparison, the pair comes first, followed by the unpaired ranks in descending order if necessary. Suits do not break an otherwise equal comparison. This is not the Pusoy Dos suit-order rule.
Example 1: an ace does not replace the pair comparison
Copy these two lines onto paper. The examples in this article are independent exercises; return all cards before setting up the next one.
- A: 8♣ · 8♦ · Q♠ · 6♥ · 3♣
- B: 7♣ · 7♦ · A♥ · K♠ · 9♥
Circle only the repeated rank on each line. A has eights; B has sevens. The comparison is settled there: A ranks higher. The ace in B is not the first item being compared.
Write “pair: 8 versus 7 — stop” beneath the two lines. Leave the rest of your comparison worksheet blank, rather than creating a second contest between Q and A. You are explaining a fixed result, not changing either hand.
Example 2: make the comparison order visible
Now use A: 10♣ · 10♦ · K♣ · 8♥ · 2♠ and B: 10♥ · 10♠ · K♦ · 7♣ · 6♦. Both pairs are tens. Both highest kickers are kings. The next comparison is eight against seven.
| Worksheet line | A | B | Annotation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pair rank | 10 | 10 | Equal; continue |
| Highest kicker | K | K | Equal; continue |
| Next kicker | 8 | 7 | A higher; stop |
| Last kicker | 2 | 6 | Not reached |
Draw a line beneath the eight-versus-seven comparison. The two-versus-six line does not reverse that result. Do not add the ranks together or count how many individual cards look larger.
Try copying the same cards in a different written order. Sort the unpaired ranks again on your worksheet: the comparison stays the same. Keep the suit labels attached when checking that no physical card was copied twice.
Self-check: can the last kicker decide?
FIND THE FIRST UNEQUAL ENTRY
A: 5♣ · 5♦ · A♣ · J♥ · 9♠
B: 5♥ · 5♠ · A♦ · J♣ · 8♥
Which worksheet line first differs? Would exchanging the ace suits change the comparison?
Reveal the explanation
The pair ranks, ace kickers and jack kickers match. The last kicker is the first difference: nine in A versus eight in B, so A ranks higher. Exchanging the two ace suits leaves the rank comparison unchanged.
For a separate check, replace B’s 8♥ with 9♥. All compared ranks now match. In the standard ranking used here, neither five-card hand ranks above the other; the different suits do not supply another comparison step.
Keep a row comparison separate from a whole deal
This exercise says nothing about the remaining Pusoy rows or a complete result. It also does not validate a thirteen-card arrangement: use our row-order checklist for that separate task.
The three-card front hand needs its own size check. Two-pair and full-house categories have different comparison sequences, so first identify the pattern. App variants and settlement rules need their own instructions; no digital outcome or payout is claimed here.
