THE QUICK TAKE
Count how many times each rank appears: 3 + 2 is a full house; 2 + 2 + 1 is two pair; 3 + 1 + 1 is three of a kind.

Use five cards for this exercise
In traditional Pusoy, the middle and back each contain five cards. The front contains three, so it cannot contain a full house or two pair. For that row, see our three-card front-hand guide.
Put five cards or five written card labels in front of you. For now, ask only which ranks repeat. Keep every card in one group, so your group sizes still add up to five.
Three patterns that are easy to confuse
A full house contains three cards of one rank and two of another. Two pair contains two different pairs and one unmatched card. Three of a kind contains three equal ranks and two other cards whose ranks differ from each other and from the three.
| Pattern | Original example | Category |
|---|---|---|
| 3 + 2 | 4♣ · 4♦ · 4♥ · 9♣ · 9♠ | Full house |
| 2 + 2 + 1 | 4♣ · 4♦ · 9♥ · 9♠ · K♣ | Two pair |
| 3 + 1 + 1 | 4♣ · 4♦ · 4♥ · 9♠ · K♣ | Three of a kind |
Cover the category column. Mark each four with one pencil symbol and each nine with another. The unmatched king should stay separate. Now count the marks in each group before uncovering the label.
Name the whole five-card pattern
A full house includes a pair, but calling the whole hand “one pair” leaves out its other three cards. Likewise, finding three equal ranks is only the start: check whether the two remaining cards match each other.
For a practical note-taking method, write “rank → count” on paper. For the first example, record “4 → 3” and “9 → 2”. This short tally makes your reasoning visible and prevents you from accidentally counting one card twice.
If a label is unclear, return to reading ranks and suits before doing the tally.

COUNT, THEN NAME
You see 6♠ · Q♦ · 6♥ · Q♣ · 6♦. What are the rank counts, and what is the category?
Reveal the explanation
There are three sixes and two queens: 3 + 2, a full house. The printed order does not change those counts.
Copy the example in a different order and tally it again. Your answer should stay the same. This checks whether you understand the grouping rather than recognise one memorised picture.
What this check does not tell you
Recognising one five-card category does not validate all thirteen cards of a Pusoy layout. The relationship between the rows is a separate check. Our Pusoy overview explains that arrangement and why Pusoy Dos is different.
Use these examples as standalone paper exercises. They do not tell you which cards to keep, where to place a hand, or what outcome to expect against another player.
