THE QUICK TAKE

In Pagat’s traditional Tongits rules, exhaustion of the stock ends play when the player who took the last card completes that turn. The draw itself is not the end of an otherwise unfinished turn.

Finish the current turn

Pagat places the stock-exhaustion ending at the completion of the turn of the player who drew the last stock card. Do not stop an ordinary turn midway merely because the face-down pile has become empty. This lesson assumes no separate Tongit declaration occurs during that turn.

A normal turn includes drawing, optional melding and sapaw, and a discard. The beginner rule guide explains that sequence. Here we focus only on locating the ending on a timeline, not on deciding what to play.

Read three moments in order

Use these invented observations. Ana is the current player; Ben would be next. No one exposes a meld or performs sapaw in this example, and nobody calls Tongit.

  1. Before Ana draws: one card remains in the stock. Her turn has not yet reached its drawing step.
  2. After Ana draws: the stock contains zero cards. Ana now holds the card she took, but has not discarded. Her turn is still in progress.
  3. After Ana discards: the stated ordinary turn is complete. This is the stock-exhaustion ending point. Ben does not begin another ordinary turn.

Copy the three numbered labels onto separate pieces of paper. Under each one, write two fields: “stock count” and “turn status”. The counts are 1, 0, 0; the statuses are “not yet drawn”, “in progress” and “complete”. The same zero appears at two different moments, which is why a stock count alone cannot locate the ending.

What an empty-pile image leaves out

A drawing or screenshot showing an empty stock does not tell you whether the current player has finished. Add an action description next to it: “last stock card just taken” or “last-stock-card turn completed”. If you cannot establish which happened, write “turn completion unconfirmed”.

Keep the stock separate from the discard pile. The visible top discard does not refill the stock in this timeline, and a remaining discard pile is not evidence that another ordinary turn should start. Use our table-area guide if the piles are unfamiliar.

For an App report, preserve the screen label and observed sequence rather than inferring internal state from an animation. We have not checked how a particular Tongits Go mode displays this ending.

Put the event labels in order

TIMELINE CHECK

The labels have been shuffled:
A: Ana completes the ordinary turn with a discard.
B: Ana draws the one remaining stock card.
C: One card remains in the stock before Ana draws.

Put them in order. At which label does the stock reach zero? At which does the stock-exhaustion ending take effect?

Reveal the explanation

The order is C → B → A. The stock reaches zero at B; the turn-completion ending is at A. Combining B and A into one event would hide the distinction this exercise is testing.

This is a sequencing exercise, not a complete hand history. It supplies no ranks, meld eligibility or final point totals, so it cannot identify a winner.

An ending is not automatically a tie

An exhausted stock does not by itself mean equal scores or a tied result. Pagat’s ending rules separately address opened hands, unmatched-card totals and ties. Those result checks require facts that this timeline deliberately does not supply.

Also keep drawing a card separate from the declaration called Draw. See one word, two actions for that vocabulary distinction. For a digital mode, consult its own ending rules before applying this traditional sequence. No payment, bonus or betting rules are part of this lesson.
