THE QUICK TAKE

In the traditional rules described by Pagat, the dealer starts and play continues counterclockwise, to the player on the current player’s right. Right means the seated player’s right while facing the table.

Whose right are you using?

A rule saying “the player on your right” uses the current player’s position, facing into the table. It does not always mean the right edge of a photograph. Pagat describes traditional Tongits play as counterclockwise, with the dealer taking the opening turn.

Use this lesson only to identify the next seat. It assumes ordinary turns continue and no ending occurs. The beginner guide explains the actions within a turn; turn direction answers a different question.

Draw a clock-face seating map

Draw a circle as seen from above. Mark three seats at these clock positions, with everyone facing the centre. These positions are teaching labels, not a required table shape.

SeatPosition on your pageNext seat counterclockwise
Ana — dealer6 o’clock, bottomBen at 2 o’clock
Ben2 o’clock, upper rightCora at 10 o’clock
Cora10 o’clock, upper leftAna at 6 o’clock

Trace the rim in the direction opposite a clock’s hands: Ana → Ben → Cora → Ana. From the bottom seat, the first movement goes up the right side of the page. From Ben’s seat, the next movement goes across the top toward the left side of the page. Both movements follow the same direction around the table.

Put a pencil at each seat and point it toward the centre. Imagine sitting behind that pencil: the next seat lies on that player’s right. This prevents the common mistake of using your own right-hand side for every player in the drawing.

Rotate the page, keep the names

Turn your paper halfway around. Ana is now at the top of your view, Ben at the lower left and Cora at the lower right. Do not rename the players or swap their chairs.

Read the arrows again: the named order remains Ana → Ben → Cora → Ana. The next player after Ana now appears toward your left, even though the direction of play has not changed. Add the caption “same seats, rotated view” below this second reading.

A mirror image is a different transformation from a rotation. If a video or image is mirrored, its apparent clockwise direction can reverse. When the view is uncertain, use a labelled seat map or an explicit turn log instead of guessing from screen position.

Repair one turn-log entry

FOLLOW THE NAMED CYCLE

Use the original map. All listed turns finish normally, and play continues. A learner writes:
1 Ana · 2 Ben · 3 Cora · 4 Ben

Which entry breaks the order? If the map is rotated halfway, does that correction change?

Reveal the explanation

Entry 4 should be Ana. Cora’s next neighbour in the named cycle is Ana, not Ben. Rotating the whole map changes where the names appear on the page but leaves the same correction.

For a second check, start reading halfway through the cycle at Ben. Write the next three names: Cora, Ana, Ben. Starting your notes at a different moment does not change who follows whom.

Direction does not prove a complete turn

A correct name sequence does not show that each player drew or discarded correctly. Keep separate columns for “player” and “observed action”. The dealer’s initial turn differs from later ordinary turns; see the deal-count guide for the starting quantities.

Stop extending the cycle if an ending has occurred. Our last-stock-card timeline explains one such boundary. A Tongits Go screen may arrange avatars differently; this article does not verify any App seat animation, timer or rule variant. No cards are selected, and no stakes or payment rules enter this exercise.
