THE QUICK TAKE
The initial stock has 15 cards: 52 − (13 + 12 + 12). Label the moment you are counting, because drawing, discarding and exposing cards change where the cards are, not how many exist.

Count the deal before making any move
Pagat’s traditional Tongits setup uses 52 cards without jokers: 13 for the dealer and 12 for each of the other two players. The undealt remainder becomes the face-down stock. Therefore, 13 + 12 + 12 = 37 cards have been dealt and 52 − 37 = 15 remain.
Write “just after dealing” above your first count. For this reference, the dealer starts the discard pile with an opening discard; there is not yet a discard in this checkpoint. The beginner rules guide gives the surrounding turn sequence.
Follow four checkpoints on one worksheet
Use paper labels or a checked deck. Name the seats D (dealer), N (next player) and T (third player). For this demonstration, nobody exposes a meld or adds cards to one, and N draws from the stock. Follow only these stated actions.
| Checkpoint | Hands: D / N / T | Stock | Discards | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A: deal complete | 13 / 12 / 12 | 15 | 0 | 52 |
| B: D discards one | 12 / 12 / 12 | 15 | 1 | 52 |
| C: N draws one from stock | 12 / 13 / 12 | 14 | 1 | 52 |
| D: N discards one | 12 / 12 / 12 | 14 | 2 | 52 |
Read each row horizontally, then compare adjacent rows. Between A and B, only D’s hand and the discard pile change. Between B and C, one card leaves the stock and enters N’s hand. Between C and D, it is N’s hand and the discard count that change. There is no need to reveal or choose any rank for this arithmetic exercise.
Give every moved card a minus and a plus
Under the ledger, draw a short line for each transfer: source −1 → destination +1. This is bookkeeping notation for our worksheet. If you increase one column without decreasing the other, the total grows even though you added no physical card.
Count the whole discard pile, not only its visible top card. Keep the table-area guide beside your sheet if the labels are unfamiliar. If you extend the exercise to cards laid on the table, add a separate column for those cards; do not keep counting them as held cards too.
A total of 52 checks quantity only. It cannot detect one duplicated label replacing a missing label. Before using a physical pack, also check its ranks and suits.

CHECK THE TOTAL AND THE MOMENT
Sheet 1: the three hand counts each show 12, the stock shows 15 and the discard pile shows 2.
Sheet 2: the three hands each show 12, the stock shows 14 and the discards show 2. Its heading says “immediately after the dealer’s opening discard”, with no other action recorded.
Reveal the explanation
Sheet 1 totals 53, so at least one recorded count is wrong. The numbers alone do not identify which column; recount the labelled areas.
Sheet 2 totals 52, but the heading does not match checkpoint B. Its numbers match checkpoint D in this demonstration. Check the action log or correct the heading; a correct total does not prove a correct timeline.
Copy the ledger once with the checkpoint labels covered. Ask a partner to restore the labels from the recorded transfers. If an action is missing, mark the gap instead of inventing it.
Keep this ledger separate from a live hand
The 15-card figure belongs to the initial stock, not every later turn. The worksheet deliberately leaves out melding, sapaw, discard pickups and ending conditions. It is a setup and record-reading exercise, not a way to select moves or infer a winner.
An App may animate or group cards differently. Consult its exact mode instructions before treating a displayed counter as a stock count. No App screen or mode was tested for this lesson.
