THE QUICK TAKE

Adding a card to another player’s meld does not itself open your hand. In the traditional rules described here, opening requires laying down your own meld; a valid group still held in your hand is a different state.

Traditional Tongits vocabulary · Original paper exercises without stakes · App modes require their own rules

An action can be allowed without opening the hand

Pagat’s Tongits reference permits a player to lay off cards before opening. Opening normally means putting at least one of your own valid melds on the table. Adding a card to someone else’s existing group is sapaw; that action alone does not establish that you have opened.

A valid set or run kept in your hand also differs from a meld laid down. Group shape, location and action are separate facts. If the vocabulary is new, start with sets, runs and sapaw.

Three records that look similar but say different things

Use the following as three independent teaching snapshots. They are not consecutive turns or complete dealt hands. In each snapshot, Ana has not opened earlier. Read only the stated action; do not invent an earlier meld.

RecordWhat happensWhat it establishes
A: add one cardBen already has 5♣ · 6♣ · 7♣ on the table. Ana adds 8♣ to Ben’s run.Ana has performed sapaw. This record does not open Ana’s hand.
B: hold a groupAna has 9♣ · 9♦ · 9♥ together in her hand and leaves them there. The labels identify a set, but the record does not show an opening action.
C: lay a group downAna places her 4♠ · 5♠ · 6♠ face up on the table as her own meld. The record describes Ana opening with a run.

For each row, underline the action verb and circle the location. “Adds to Ben’s run”, “leaves in her hand” and “places on the table” should produce different annotations even though all three descriptions mention valid card patterns.

A face-down set is a specific exception

Pagat also describes opening by placing a four-of-a-kind set face down, provided the player did not draw from the discard pile to complete it. This is a specific exception, not permission to count any hidden group as an opening. It still involves laying the set down.

On a paper record, write “four-card set laid face down” and separately record whether a discard completed it. If that second fact is missing, mark the exception as unconfirmed. Do not substitute “the cards were hidden” for both facts. This lesson excludes payment and bonus rules.

Repair an incomplete description without changing the play

Suppose a note says only: “Ana put a card on the table, so she opened.” That sentence omits the destination and the group. Rewrite the observation as two blanks: “Ana placed [exact card or cards] into [her new meld / an existing meld belonging to ___].” Leave a blank unresolved if the original observation does not supply it.

This is a record-keeping exercise. You are improving the description, not moving a card or choosing a better play. Our table-area guide can help label the destination.

Self-check: do two different actions add up to an opening?

READ THE TWO OBSERVATIONS

Ana has not opened. She holds 2♥ · 3♥ · 4♥ without laying them down. She also adds J♦ to Ben’s existing 8♦ · 9♦ · 10♦ run. Do these observations establish that Ana opened?

Reveal the explanation

No. The hearts remain in her hand, and the diamond is added to Ben’s group. Neither observation records Ana laying down her own meld. Listing both actions does not turn either one into the missing opening action.

Keep this traditional-rule answer separate from an App’s visual badges or automatic grouping. For a particular mode, read its help text before interpreting an “open” indicator. The beginner rule guide provides the surrounding turn sequence.
